Good, Beautiful, and True: Folk Music

It's been a while since I've posted! To be honest, i'm not sure if I'm really a blogger type person. I don't write down my thoughts in a very witty or engaging way. But! Blogging is a place where one can write down their thoughts. Like when writing an opinion paper. But for free! No college tuition! And you aren't graded!

Unless reader engagement is the grade?

It's a new year. And I haven't drawn any real artwork, or written anything. Sooo... I don't have anything to share in that regard.

Instead I've decided to highlight some music!

Specifically Folk style music for this post.

My definition of 'folk' for this list is pretty vague. Some of these songs might not really be considered Folk music.

That being said, here is the list along with some lyrics. :)

1. Paidir Eireann

 ~

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be at your back

May the sun shine warm upon you

~

And... I can't quite tell what they sing after that. And looking it up wasn't a help.

It sounds like Garner what you have? Is Garner a word?

I'm not really sure. But the lyrics go on after that of course, and they are very beautiful!

2. Pretty Fair Maid in the Garden

 ~

She said I've a true love who's in the army

And he's been gone for seven long years

And if he's gone for seven years longer

I'll still be waiting for him here

Perhaps he's on some watercourse drowning

Perhaps he's on some battlefield slain

Perhaps he's to a fair girl married

And you may never see him again

Well if he's drowned, I hope he's happy

Or if he's on some battlefield slain

And if he's to some fair girl married

I'll love the girl that married him

~

Somewhat fun fact: until about a week ago, the last time I heard this song was more than 14 years ago. Throughout the years of the song being lost to me, (which sounds dramatic! I just couldn't remember the title.) I would always remember the sacrifical love that the woman in the song displayed.

It's not as dramatic as I had remembered. There are not many verses. But it is still a good song!

3. Carry On

 ~

Time is a strange thing takin' its toll

It never gets weary and it never lets go

Times takin' over every body and mind

But it can't take your joy cause your spirit won't die

~

This is a catchy little song, with a good moral. :)

4. The Farmer

 ~

When the man heard the words, he went

Never to look back again

Placed his hands on the plow and worked

Deep furrows in the ground

And though his hands began to bleed

As he plowed and planted seeds

He would not look for rest

He would only sing

~

I'm not 100% sure. But I think this is about carrying your cross and manning up. A good moral! :D

5. Take Lord, Receive

 ~

Give me your love and your grace

For with this I have all that I need

Lord, I have all that I need

Take Lord, receive

I give you all I am

All I was, and will be

~

Ever since I've read this prayer in the red TLM missal (Can every Catholic growing up attending the TLM relate?) I've loved this prayer!

6. The Soldier and the Oak

 ~

This is a story that began long, long ago

I was a young oak the in dark Missouri soil

And like all other saplings

I had dreams of growing strong and tall

One day a rebel with a bullet in his chest

Hung his rifle on my limbs and laid to rest

~

This song is 1. Historical. 2. Sad. 3. But also not sad. There's hope as well.

So, of course, it is one of my favorite songs.

7. Rising

I can't find the lyrics for this song anywhere and I'm not sure, off the top of my head, what they're singing. But it is a very calming song!
